Hardiman Kawasaki ATV Race Team rider Todd O'Leary will be swapping four wheels for . . . none when he lines up at the 75th running of the Bridge to Bridge race this Sunday 1 May on his Kawasaki Ultra 260X Jet Ski.
Having achieved much success to date on board his Kawasaki KFX450R race ATV, O'Leary will race a Jet Ski for the first time ever this weekend. O'Leary purchased an Ultra 260X recently so his kids could start skiiing and wake boarding and he will now contest the family fun machine in the Jet Ski class of the Bridge to Bridge, run from Wisemans Ferry to Windsor. O'Leary says, "For us, it's a family sport that has gotten out of control. With the quads, we're an outcast to motorbike riders, so we thought, why not do the same to boat drivers with the Jet Ski?"
"The guys at FMR (Formula Moto Racing) in Castle Hill have serviced my Kawasaki Ultra 260X and have been great support in preparing me for an event I have absolutely no experience in. I'm hoping the skills I have learned on the Kawasaki KFX450R ATV will carry over somewhat to the Jet Ski."
With the recent release of Kawasaki's new Ultra 300X Jet ski, O'Leary realises that it will be a tough battle on Sunday. "Kawasaki have just released their new Ultra 300X, which has 300 horsepower, 40 more HP than the model I'm going to be racing. I believe there will be a couple of these in the event with some veteran riders on board them, so competition will be tough."
O'Leary is philosophical about his chances in his debut Jet Ski race saying, "I just want to finish the race - and hopefully not come last."
If Todd O'Leary rides the Ultra 260X in any way similar to the way he rides his KFX450R ATV, he certainly won't be last!
