Victorian off road racer Ben McCosh overcame numerous challenges and hurdles at the 2011 Condo Desert Rally to finish just outside the top ten, taking 11th place outright on board his KLX450R over the Easter long weekend.
With the backing of multiple sponsors and two different Kawasaki dealerships, McCosh was able to campaign one extremely competitive KLX450R over the 2 day navigational rally. In fact his Kawasaki was so competitive, McCosh was able to prologue in 3rd place for the rally start on the Saturday.
Kawasaki dealership Matt Jones Motorcycles supplied the KLX450R for McCosh and Hands-On Kawasaki provided a large fuel tank and a steering damper. A tyre sponsor also came to the party and before he knew it, McCosh’s ride was shaping up to be a good one. The bikes engine remained completely stock with only a slight jetting change and an after-market exhaust system was fitted for the extreme top end speeds and a little gearing change helped the top end. Chads Off-Road Setups gave the suspension the once over and the KLX450R was ready to race!
Saturday was a tough day for McCosh with a couple of navigational errors, a map reader failure for one whole section and a severe crash into a fence at speed. He still managed to finish 15th for the day with an 8th in stage 5 his best result for the day.
Sunday proved to be a more successful day. With a fixed map reader, McCosh took 6th place in two different stages and enjoyed a good clear run for most of the day. He was able to finish 8th outright for the day bumping him up to 11th outright for the event and 9th in the H2 class.
Ben McCosh says, “I had really hoped to finish inside the top 10 for all the people that have helped onto the start line of this great race. Upside is, people at the race had not seen a Kawasaki that far up the front for a long time.”
“Thanks to everyone that helped me out, the Uni-Filters kept out the dust, Shotz nutrition kept me charging for the whole event and the KLX450R went hard and didn’t miss a beat!”
