Z1000 - The Radical Super-Naked

The sculpted bodywork is carefully crafted to bring the aggressive Z design to the next level; the Super-Naked. Kawasaki engineers were also determined to further enhance the riding impact offered by the dynamic Super-Naked. The engine and chassis settings deliver a stiffer, more direct ride feel sure to please experienced riders. Updated for Euro 4 with addional features and revised engine and chassis settings to make the Z1000 the Supernaked leader.

This significant step forward, in both looks and feel, transforms the Z1000 into the market’s most radical Supernaked.  Its appearance and performance can be expressed by the word sugomi - imposing and inspiring awe.

Condensed, dynamic form. Intense Glare.

A key visual component is the LED headlamp cowl which was positioned as low as possible, extending the line running down from the top of the tank to create the image of a crouching predator’s muscular shoulders and dropped head.  

The condensed, dynamic form is reinforced by all-new bodywork that fits much closer to the engine and frame.  As before mass is concentrated at the front, with the light tail cowl a mere wisp, as if drawn with the flick of a pen.

LED Headlamp

This was the first time for Kawasaki to use the reflector-less LED headlamp design.

Using LED lamps allows the design to be thin, the shape contributing to the more intense glare of the Z1000’s face, and the reflector-less design further enhances its predatory appearance.

The bodywork of the Z1000 creates a lean image it compared to its predecessor.  The design trims bulk and unnecessary design flourishes to highlight the functionality of the bike’s parts. 

The bodywork is fit to the bike with much tighter tolerances – space between the bodywork and engine/frame is minimised – adding to the high quality image

Mirrors have a greater range of movement, increasing rearward visibility and offering easier adjustability. 5-way adjustable brake and clutch lever can be set to suit the size of the rider’s hands, contributing to rider comfort. Clear reservoir on the front brake master cylinder enhances the high quality appearance.

Seating with Style

The Z1000's front seat features a “Z” pattern seat cover material, adding a high-quality touch.

Rear seat shape is integrated into that of the front seat.  The compact pillion pad was designed to have the appearance of a single-seat cover, adding to the sporty look of the compact tail section.

Compact Instrumentation

Gear position indicator increases shifting precision and confidence, while also lending to the Z1000’s sporty image. New shift-up indicator function contributes a sportier image and makes shifting through the gears a more exciting experience. (The top part of the bar-style tachometer – from 4,000 rpm onward – flashes when the set rpm is reached. Clock can be displayed in either 12h or 24h time, according to rider preference.

Rider Exhilaration

It is important to note that the Z1000’s direct response and awesome riding exhilaration do not come at the cost of manageability. Contrary to its aggressive appearance, the Z1000 is accommodating and enables riders of various skill levels to experience its highly stimulating engine and chassis performance.


Revised ECU settings contribute to an even smoother power delivery, facilitating control and contributing to rider comfort and confidence, and deliver cleaner emissions, ensuring Euro 4 regulations are cleared. Evaporator further contributes to cleaner emissions.

Liquid-cooled, DOHC, 16-valve 1,043 cm3 In-line Four offers impressive power (104.5 kW (142 PS) and strong torque.

Assist & Slipper Clutch

Assist & Slipper Clutch was developed based on feedback from racing activities. The clutch uses two types of cams (an assist cam and a slipper cam), offering lighter lever pressure and back-torque limiter function for smooth down changes.

Lighter & Sportier Operation

When the engine is operating at normal rpm the assist cam functions as a self-servo mechanism, pulling the clutch hub and operating plate together to compress the clutch plates. This allows the total clutch spring load to be reduced, resulting in a lighter clutch lever pull when operating the clutch. Fewer clutch springs translate to a lighter clutch lever feel.

When excessive engine braking occurs – as a result of quick downshifts (or an accidental downshift) – the slipper cam comes into play, forcing the clutch hub and operating plate apart. This relieves pressure on the clutch plates to reduce back-torque and help prevent the rear tyre from hopping and skidding.

High-Torque Engine

Power delivery is quite linear, but the engine spins up noticeably faster from about 7,000 rpm onwards. Silky smooth response at all rpm ensures excellent driveability.

Cool Air System

The Cool Air system routes cool air to the airbox from ducts at the front of the side fairings, minimising performance loss due to heated intake air. The carefully crafted auditory note of the intake is a key component of the street riding exhilaration offered by the Z1000.  A resonator inside the airbox reduces noise at low rpm, and enhances intake sound at high rpm.

Stylish Quad Outlet Mufflers

Revisions to the main and pre-catalysers contribute to cleaner emissions, ensuring Euro 4 regulations are cleared.


The highly rigid aluminium frame features a high degree of mass centralisation, creating a balance between sharp turning and firm handling.

Modified linkage ratio increases rear wheel travel by 13 mm to 135 mm and delivers in suppler rear suspension action.  Shock absorption is improved and the rear feels more planted.

Mass Centralisation

The exhaust system, horizontal back-link rear suspension and the use of downdraft throttle bodies are the greatest contributors to mass centralisation. The horizontal back-link rear suspension arrangement frees up space taken up by the Uni-Trak suspension lower linkage, enabling a larger pre-chamber and allows the use of shorter mufflers to contribute to mass centralisation.

Separate Function Fork-Big Piston (SFF-BP)

Revised front fork settings deliver suppler action. Aggressive riding feel is maintained, while the significantly improved shock absorption offers increased ride comfort. The settings also contribute to lighter, natural handling.

ABS Front and Rear Brakes

The Z1000 features Tokico monobloc calipers and larger 310 mm front petal discs.  Achieving the Z1000 braking characteristics required a redefinition of what Kawasaki’s “ideal” braking for a Super-Naked was to be. Revised rear brake pad material and optimised return spring offer improved control and increased overall performance.
